Q:
What
can I do about black spot on roses?
A: The best cure
is prevention. Choose resistant varieties (Sky's rose list
rates the general disease resistance of most of the roses
we carry), and use good sanitation to eliminate most of the
spores. This means: pruning off the top third of your bushes
in the fall; raking up all dead leaves and pruning clippings;
and pruning to a nice open shape in the spring to maximize
air circulation to your plant.
If
further measures are needed, Green Light's Rose Defense is
an organic neem-oil based spray that will help against blackspot
as well as several other problems. If a chemical control is
required, try Immunox for big beautiful bloomers.
